A powered drawbar is mighty nice to have too. Tooling is definitely not cheap! But suddenly, I had a whole new category of tooling to add. At the very least, I needed a CAD program to make drawings which I would then feed to a CAM program to generate the gcode needed to be really productive with the machine.
G-Code editors and feeds and speeds calculators were not far behind. Some machinists are funny about Digital Tooling. Go figure. As usual, it pays to have better tooling, but with CNC it is especially important to have good cnc softwrae.
In CNC alone, CNC Software can be completely transformative to your productivity in ways that are not even dreamed of with manual machining. CNC is to manual machining as word processing is to a manual typewriter. I love a sweet Monarch 10EE as much as the next guy.
For most of us, the end result from CNC comes out looking much nicer, and with much less effort. Word processors still use printers, which may need paper and toner cartridges, but they have no need of correcting fluid. This article is the broad but not very deep guide.

What are the pros and cons? The distinction between the two is quite a hot topic in the CAD world today. For a long time parametric was thought to be the highest productivity. Lately, people are beginning to question that assumption and look more closely at explicit modeling. In all likelihood, the two will meet somewhere in the middle with parametric CAD software developing explicit modeling features and vice versa.

I just found out HSMXpress. It's free and integrated in SolidWorks as long as you have a legal version. The software is verry well integrated in SW and I could program simple 2,5D parts in just minutes. I think CNC router is the best for generating cnc part program. You can complete a part start to finish 3D model, generate tool paths and export Gcode with Autodesk fusionwhich comes with integrated HSMworks cam, 2. I use MasterCam everyday, it's versatile and powerful. I know delcam also make good product like powermill and featurecam, collegues had used these software and were pleased. The limitation of Mastercam is that it's not parametric, if you make a change to your model you have to reimport it insede mastercam and reasign the operations to the geometry.
If possible try to go with something integrated inside your CAD software like mastercam for solidworks or delcam for solidworks. NX has a built-in cnc porgramming software wich is very powerful I used it at school. MasterCAM is very expensive and rather buggy.You have a simple goal, to take a CAD file and get your mill to cut it. Users have come up with incredible uses for this feature to make parts that would be almost impossible with a traditional CAD program.
MeshCAM has a built-in post processor to transform the gcode to work with your machine. It supports lots of machine types as-is and it can be extended to support most other. The post processor format is fully documented in the help file so you can make changes if you find the need.
The worst part of any new CNC software is being confronted by a wall of settings to create a toolpath. You just pick the cutters, tell MeshCAM the desired quality level, and it will analyze the model to pick values to get you started.
You can tweak them to make them better or use them as-is. Every part requires a slightly different approach to machine it efficiently. This is not something you have to worry about with MeshCAM.
